WHAT IS DRY MOUTH?
A dry mouth, or xerostomia, occurs when there is a decrease in saliva production in the mouth. Saliva is essential for maintaining oral health as it helps neutralize acids, wash away food particles, and prevent bacterial growth. Various factors can cause dry mouth, including certain medications, medical conditions like Sjögren's syndrome, or lifestyle habits such as smoking or excessive caffeine intake. A dry mouth can lead to discomfort, and difficulty in chewing, swallowing, and speaking, as well as an increased risk of tooth decay and oral infections. To manage dry mouth, individuals should stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and using saliva substitutes or artificial saliva products to moisten the mouth.
